Doom 4 is Coming
The last three years or so saw me visiting my friends’ now-defunct Internet café, where I played Doom 3 and completed its single player campaign no less than three times — the first in beginner mode, the 2nd in Veteran and the third (also in Veteran) when they upgraded their computers. (I just had to see the unparalleled bump mapping!)
Doom 3’s graphics were unprecedented.
What is the premise of the game’s story? Well there’s this ultra rich research company, the UAC that set up shop on — of all places — Mars. Here they have begun research and development on teleportation technology. Unfortunately, during their dabbling with it, they unwittingly opened portals to hell. The game begins with you doing a routine mission in one of the abandoned sector of the facility when the demons make their move and pour out from several portals.

Juan was aghast to find out his co-makers have located his new residence.
My major gripe with the game is that it takes place in very claustrophobic environments. This may be attributed to the fact that the game was already pushing most of the PCs in existence at the time it was released and letting the story run through expansive environments would only have made the game unplayable with most gaming rigs. (The expansion pack, Resurrection of Evil, did feature larger maps to run through gauntlets of monsters.)
Imagine you and this guy running around a very small space, with him shouting in bad English “Your back is broke!” over and over again. Drives anyone nuts. Kidding.
Now Doom 4 is coming and while yes, I am looking forward to blasting imps and chaingunning cacodemons on wide open maps, what really excites me is that — if Doom 3’s near perfect emulation of the original Doom’s setting and plot is any indication — Doom 4 would most likely be a rehash of the original Doom 2: Hell on Earth.
What I’ve been dreaming and yammering about all those months ago is now finally coming true.
That’s right folks. Demons from Mars. On. Earth.
