Intel Core i7 — a CPU That can Overclock Itself
What is the world coming to these days?
There is a video card that has two GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) in the form of the Radeon HD 4870 X2. For those who can’t understand geek speak, here’s how to set it in the proper perspective: it’s like two video cards in one. Yep, it’s a monster. Call Ahab.
And then, there’s an upcoming CPU that can overclock itself.
Enter Intel’s Core i7 series. These multi-core processors have a “turbo mode” feature that is unlike the turbo mode feature of the computers of the late 80’s. The innovation is based on the rationale of dynamically increasing the CPU’s frequency when some of the cores aren’t utilized by a Core i7 CPU, thereby increasing single threaded performance when that is all that is being used by an application software.
This design is pure genius as it allows the CPU to cut off idle cores, thereby minimizing wattage and improving performance while keeping Core i7 CPUs cool.
This feature, coupled with the overclocking efforts of hardware geeks, will definitely take gaming experience (physics, AI, etc) to a whole new level.
