Before we start learning how to paint, we must first learn about colors.

Don’t you know that you can paint using only three colors? Maybe some would find this hard to believe but actually it’s true. You can make a lot of colors by mixing only three, namely, red, blue, and yellow. These colors are called primary colors.

Now let’s try mixing two primary colors. When you mix red with blue, you’ll get violet. When you mix red and yellow, you’ll get orange. Lastly, when you mix blue and yellow, you’ll get green. Try it out and see for yourself. Fun isn’t it? Violet, orange and green are called secondary colors.

If there are primary colors and secondary colors, there are also tertiary colors. Tertiary colors are made when you mix a primary with a secondary color that is not the complimentary color. Try mixing blue and green and you’ll get blue green.  Mix violet with blue and you’ll get blue violet. You’ll get yellow orange when you mix yellow and orange. You’ll get yellow green when you mix yellow and green. Mix red and orange and you’ll get red orange. Lastly, you’ll get red violet when you mix red and violet.

Maybe you would like to ask what complimentary colors are. Complimentary colors are two colors that when mixed together would give you the color brown. Examples of two complimentary colors are blue, which is a primary color and orange, which is a secondary color. Other complimentary colors are red and green.  Usually these colors are associated with Christmas. The last pair is yellow and violet.

I’ve made a color wheel for you. Check it out.
