Looking for a Sign

When I was younger, I was having a difficult time deciding what I wanted to be although I already knew then that I have a talent in the arts. I wanted to pursue Fine Arts but I also wanted to pursue architecture at the same time.

When my grandmother got sick, I told her I’d pursue medicine so that I could help her be well. When I was already in high school, I joined the Citizen Army Training (CAT) Commissioned Officers Candidate Course (COCC) because my peer group joined. Later on I became a cadet officer-in-charge of logistics and armory. During that time I wanted to pursue a career in the military.

I would never forget my dad’s face when he saw my uniform with 3 suns on my collar indicating that I was a cadet captain. He told me to take the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) exam upon graduation. He said that it was good that I was showing interest in joining his field of service.

After graduation in high school, I took the PMA exams. I also took the medical technology exams at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) and the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) at U.P. Diliman with fine arts as the first course of choice and architecture as the second course of choice. I placed architecture as a second choice because it was a quota course. After all the exams, I just entrusted everything to God to decide where He wanted me to be.

The first result I got was from U.P. Diliman telling me that I could now enroll as a freshman at the U.P. College of Fine Arts. U.P. Diliman is a large university so I was very much excited to start studying there. My parents were also proud that I’ve made it there because no one in the family, both mother and father side, was able to study there. I was the first one. I took it as a sign that God wanted me to pursue a career in the arts.

It is so amazing how much God loves us that He’ll put us in a place so that we’d become the persons we’re meant to be.
